Maricopa Integrated Health System in Phoenix, AZ turned to A|r to address a critical shortage of secure behavioral treatment beds in the Maryvale County (West Phoenix) area. Responding to this challenge the project team programmed, designed and constructed complete renovation and adaptive reuse of a former general medical hospital in less than 12 months (an almost unheard-of accomplishment)! A|r worked closely with MIHS leadership and direct care teams to rapidly assess treatment needs, new floor plan configurations, and construction details within the constraints of an existing building and demanding schedule.
A|r’s BIM/PlanGRID capabilities enabled rapid prototyping, off-site pre-fabrication and change order avoidance throughout construction. A|r identified vendors and resources for fast track procurement of patient safety and ligature resistant products. Throughout construction, A|r worked closely with the clinical and construction teams to expedite decisions, ensure the goals of a safe and effective treatment environment were achieved (PoE) and state and federal accreditation standards were achieved.
The success of this project has set a new standard for secure inpatient care in the Phoenix area and lead to additional A|r patient safety improvement projects at other MIHS secure behavioral health facilities.
