Currently, we are transforming Butler Library at Buffalo State College from a traditional library into an environment that incorporates modern technology, easily accessible resources, and encourages academic achievement. The existing library services within the three story building will be minimized and relocated to the 2nd and 3rd floor, opening the 1st floor to accommodate the new “Academic Commons.” The Academic Commons will be the hub for students to come together to interact, learn, research, and create within the library. Entering into Butler Library, students will be welcomed with dramatic lobby entrances from opposite sides of the building. Intuitive way finding will guide visitors to the information center where they will be directed to student academic services, a variety of flexible study/tutor areas, computer stations, a café, and a private reading room. The Academic Commons, a 65,000 SF project to be completed in 2019, will provide student services for Writing, Math, Advising, Honors, Testing, Student Accessibility Services, & Technology Support. The design of the interior finishes, furniture, and lighting are an extension of the architecture and programming that will push the transformation into a 21st century learning environment. In addition to reprogramming spaces, we are providing critical maintenance upgrades, including comprehensive replacement of mechanical systems, window replacement, handicap accessibility modifications, and hazardous materials remediation.
This project was completed in collaboration with MAP Architecture.
