As part of the AK360 initiative, A|r was engaged by the Albright Knox Art Gallery (AKAG) to assist in the documentation of its existing campus. After a thoughtful review of the needs set forth by the AKAG staff and the OMA design team, A|r envisioned and coordinated the precise cataloguing of the historic buildings contained in the existing campus: the 1905 E.B. Green building and the 1962 Gordon Bunshaft addition. Step one of the documentation process consisted in obtaining a high level of precision point cloud model, accompanied by 360-spherical imagery and thermal data of each space in the campus. The creation of an existing conditions building information model (BIM) in the Revit platform was step two. Our team worked collaboratively to determine the needs and level of accuracy required for the project, then led the survey process: from selecting a laser scanning team to managing their work collecting point cloud data on site. After completing the laser scanning process, A|r aided in the development of the final existing conditions Revit model and performed a quality assurance review of the data taken during the laser survey. This process ensured the accuracy of the final Level of Development (LOD) 300 model. The highly intelligent parametric model and the accompanying point cloud are now crucial tools for the AKAG and OMA teams in informing decisions at all stages of the design process. Efficient documentation= successful design.
