In architectural theory and design practice, buildings are treated as static objects. A design may propose spaces, finishes, and adjacencies that respond to one potential path for a building’s use.

One of the earliest steps in our design process is illustrating the forces that will affect a future design. It is imperative for us to understand how a new project will interact with its surroundings, make us feel, appear throughout the season, and accommodate the needs of future occupants.

No precise definition of a courtyard exists. Throughout time, courtyards have manifested in many fashions, whether open or enclosed, offering a main attraction or a tranquil transition, a public destination, or a secluded retreat.

This holiday season, A|r accepted the challenge to enter Herman Miller’s annual gingerbread house competition.
